INSTRUCTOR POST - Welcome New Students

Welcome to the AAU Spring Semester of 2012

This is a persistent online site I use to allow students in my class to solicit and offer feedback on their animation. There are a few important notes;

1. Conduct yourself here as you would in the class. Play nice with others and be supportive and constructive with your comments. Limit the posting to information relevant to the class.

2. I use participation here as part of your class participation mark. Participation accounts for 20% of your total grade! If you're shy this is a great way to be involved in the classroom discussion. You get points for posting your work or for giving feedback on other people’s animation.

3. Title each post with your name, for example: “David Latour: Blocking Pass 1”. Your blogger ID may not be something I recognize.  You don't want to miss out on participation marks when you post here.

4. This blog is as helpful as you make it. Be active with comments, post your work regularly and take advantage of this venue. Monitor this site at least once a week. I will use this as a forum to make general announcements and answer common questions, so you don't want to miss out.

Even If you're new to blogging you'll find this a pretty painless and straightforward process. If you have something from class you'd like to show, use the following steps:
·         Playblast your work (approx resolution 720x480, convert to .mov, with H264 compression)
·         Post the movie file on any video streaming site (YouTube, Vimeo)
·          Copy the “embed HTML” from the streaming site
·         In blogger click "new post" on the upper right corner of the screen and click on the "edit HTML" tab on the top right of the new post and paste the code in the window.
5. Blogger works best with Mozilla Firefox, or Google Chrome. If you have technical issues: try switching your browser. Make sure you login with the Google ID that you were invited with or you won’t be able to post or comment.

Every time someone adds a new post or comments on an existing one, I get a direct email. I try to look in here regularly and offer critique and guidance as well. This blog will be available as space allows, so you will be able to continue posting here after the end of term. (You may even see former students offering feedback here.)
Welcome to the blog and have a great time.

*Your first assignment:  Post your name in the comments of this welcome message with a sentence or two about what you hope to learn in this class and the two assignments you plan to do.

Test message for week 1

My name is Taylor Holmes. In this class I want to focus on my workflow, planning my work instead of just blundering around until something works, and timing and exaggeration. I have a tendency to make my animations too subtle and with flat timing. I think this is because I favor realism over a cartoony style, but it ends up just coming out as not very exciting because there's no pop to it. I would appreciate any and all critique or advice you have to give, and I look forward to doing the same for you all.
I plan to do the Video Game animations, as well as the parkour assignment.

My name is Mike Grabski and I want to learn more about character acting, get a better understanding of timing for my character's acting in general, better workflow practices and better application of the 12 principals all throughout my work.

HI! By the way, nice to meet you all!

My name is Angel Liboy (from Puerto Rico/MFA student). I wanna learn everything the class can teach me. Haven't thought of anything specific yet, so I'm willing to learn anything that I didn't know, or even re learn what I might have forgotten.

As for the assignments, I'm interested in doing #4 (either the obstacle course or parkour). And for the second one I'm between #1 (an acting piece) or #2 (one of the AFG cycles). And like Taylor mention, "I would appreciate any and all critique or advice you have to give..." Hopefully I can do the same with you all. :)

Hi guys. My name is Scott Cho and this is my third year as a graduate student. I am currently updating a demo reel to apply summer internship. From taking this class, I want to improve my animating skills to make a best work for my demo reel.

For two assignments, I am thinking about doing "two characters acting" and running jump for "animation for games." I will also bring some references to see if they work for assignments.

Hi everyone! My name is Anat, I'm in the BFA program and this is my third year at the academy. I'm hoping to gain more skills and practice of character animation and workflow.
I am excited of the opportunity to choose what assignments I will be working on, and taking on new challenges I haven't dealt with yet. the two assignments I want to work on are
Dance/Paired Animation and Creature/Non-Humanoid.

Hi, everyone, nice to meet you. My name is Toshi, I'm 2nd year student and BFA in Character Animation. I want to try anything what I haven't tried animation yet in this class, such as a Non-Humanoid and a Gymnastics animation.
so, I'm interested in doing 4. Gymnastics/Obstacle Course/Parkour, and 5. Creature/Non-Humanoid.
I'm looking forward to watching my classmate's work as well.

Hey! My name is Matt Roos and this is my 3rd year at the academy. I'm hoping to use this class to further my application of the animation principles within Maya and come out with some pieces for my reel. For my projects I am choosing an acting scene and an obstacle course/parkour.

Hi everyone! This is Mary, and I'm in my final semester at the Academy finishing my BFA for Character Animation. I'm hoping to expand my animation knowledge, as well as learn how to break down/prepare for an animation instead of just diving into it.

I'm interested in doing 3. Dance/Paired Animation and 5. Creature/Non-Humanoid

Hi, I'm Mike Barnett. I think what I'm looking to learn in this class is some good animation habits. Really anything that can help me focus on my work. I already have my 12 principles posted up at my desk.
I'm planning to do the Parkour for sure. That's something I've already been gathering reference for to do on my own time.
I think I'm gonna want to do the Paired animation for my second deal.

Hello, I'm Jon Hanson. What I want to focus on in this class is really polishing my work, near the end I feel like I usually run out of steam and the final product suffers, so I want to get my work in this class as polished as possible. It's all about pushing through.

For my two assignments I'm planning on doing are Animation for Games and Lip Sync.

Can't wait to have a great semester with you all!

Hi, my name's Kelsey. Sorry I'm posting late, I had a confused first week and thus wasn't able to post in time. I'm here because I would like to refine my animation more, sort out my weaknesses/strengths, and learn to more efficiently navigate Maya. Honestly, working with the software seems to be one of my greatest hurdles. I often end up spending too much time on a project trying to correct a strange error. I wasn't super pleased with my char anm 2 stuff and hope to get some demo reel quality animations from this class. I would like to do the lip sync/acting and creature.
