It's All About History: An Animator's Poem

If I believe,
Even for an minute possibility
That this gets easier,
I haven't been challenging myself enough
To get it right.

Dig through the cosmetic delirium of
one's virtual space and
you'll find the blatant habits,
Brown paper bags full of empty
instant coffee containers
cardboard pizza boxes,
and fermented snot globules
from the constraint of our
perpetual indulgence,
stress.

Sleeplessness isn't the disease,
procrastination is a virus
spread by others,
gratefulness eludes constructive criticism
While dreams crack into rough edges,
Planes,
and vertices.

When the virtual space is switched to
reality space,
Middle click drag not getting you anywhere,
Space bar don't give you new views,
Can't scale up your devices,
No spinning around and driving forward your advisement,
A fatal error isn't the end of existence.

Remember what David says,
Help prevent RSI sir,
Unplug to restart,
And try again.

Crystal Godat - Creature Final

Rico vs. The Feather from Crystal Dawn Godat on Vimeo.

I originally wanted to use the Rexxy rig for this idea, but it proved to not be the best choice for what I wanted to do in the end. I decided to use the Koko rig and it got the job done. I'll most likely come back to this to do a render and add any additional polishing notes.

Great semester everyone, Happy Holidays!

A cool creature made with a 3D printer if anyone's looking for good references that'll creep you out. Good for understanding balance and movement with multiple legs.

We usually overlook the default pose of a relaxed hand. Here are some really useful different angles. Notice the curves contrasting the straight fingers,

Crystal Godat: Prepping for the Creature Animation

I decided to work with the adorable Rexxy Rig for the upcoming project,

I gathered reference and decided to give this little guy a personality of a naive puppy who doesn't really know better. My reference includes different ideas I was playing with as far his behavior and the small nuances these dogs do when they come across a foreign object they find threatening.

And I decided to make a rough animatic to get a rough idea of timing and possible poses I would like to use (and exaggerate). Enjoy!

Jessie Manuel!

This is the farthest I've gotten for this project. :(! Lots of jitters specially in the transitions. Character: She's a childish, happy go lucky dancer who has a tendency to get into drunken pub fights.

Final Dance

Think the major issues I had with this were the pops and the fact I couldn't get the constraints to work hand to hand. I hadn't learned yet how to drive something that was equally driven back and forth. Also I gotta get this girl some heels. :)

INSTRUCTOR POST - Welcome New Students

Welcome to the AAU Fall Semester of 2013

This is a persistent online site I use to allow students in my class to solicit and offer feedback on their animation. There are a few important notes;

1. Conduct yourself here as you would in the class. Play nice with others and be supportive and constructive with your comments. Limit the posting to information relevant to the class.

2. I use participation here as part of your class participation mark. Participation accounts for 20% of your total grade! If you're shy this is a great way to be involved in the classroom discussion. You get points for posting your work or for giving feedback on other people’s animation. Bonus question: ask me how to get 100% on your participation grade.

3. Title each post with your name, for example: “David Latour: Blocking Pass 1”. Your blogger ID may not be something I recognize.  You don't want to miss out on participation marks when you post here.

4. This blog is as helpful as you make it. Be active with comments, post your work regularly and take advantage of this venue. Monitor this site at least once a week. I will use this as a forum to make general announcements and answer common questions, so you don't want to miss out. Any post from me will have "INSTRUCTOR POST - ..." in the title: make sure you read them carefully.

Even If you're new to blogging you'll find this a pretty painless and straightforward process. If you have something from class you'd like to show, use the following steps:
·         Playblast your work (16:9 ratio, 640x360, convert to .mov, with H264 compression)
·         Post the movie file on any video streaming site (YouTube, Vimeo)
·          Copy the “embed HTML” from the streaming site
·         In blogger click "new post" on the upper right corner of the screen and click on the "edit HTML" tab on the top right of the new post and paste the code in the window.

5. Blogger works best with Mozilla Firefox, or Google Chrome. If you have technical issues: try switching your browser. Make sure you login with the Google ID that you were invited with or you won’t be able to post or comment.

Every time someone adds a new post or comments on an existing one, I get a direct email. I try to look in here regularly and offer critique and guidance as well. This blog will be available to you as space allows, which means you will be able to continue posting here after the end of term. (You may even see former students offering feedback here.)

Welcome to the blog and have a great time.

*Your first assignment:  Post your name in the comments of this welcome message with a sentence or two about what you hope to learn in this class.

So i put everything together. The run cycle still has some issues with the hip. Probably when i copy the cycle i forgot to fix the end of it to match the beginning so it begins to mess up as i further copy/paste it. Will certainly fix it later when i have time but this is what i have for now.
Good luck with your finals

Gavin Tai Game Animation

So i choose to do double sword game animation. Double sword is all about steps and balance (from my Chinese Weapon Dictionary Book), pretty much like dancing. Any comment are welcome.

An Nguyen_Parkour Final

Hi guys,
Working on the Game Animation animation but i think i should post this fixed final of the parkour animation since i am going to submit it for the 10 secs reel submission. There is one part where i am really unhappy about is when hes jumping towards the pole to swing, bet you will all notice it :((. I fixed the timing there then saved it (i think so...) but then somehow it wasn't saved then i continued to work on it without noticing the timing  is off there. I don't know i will have enough time to fix it then submit it before the deadline but i'll try.
Anyway here it is, leave any comment i appreciate it :). Will continue to work on it whenever i have time.

For my dance piece, I chose to do "Kathak", an traditional Indian classical dance form.
I thoroughly enjoyed the entire process of animating this piece and learnt the pluses of good planning and strong poses and importance of a good workflow.

Cabrera Karl, Dance

Here's my dance animation. I cut the length of it to make the deadline, but I'm pretty happy with the end result. After doing this piece, I realized that hip-hop is very challenging to animate since there are so many poses in quick succession. On top of that, there's the task getting the snappy timing and the physicality of it working properly. Gah!

Parkour Final

It was pretty hard to deal with 360' spin, this is my final.
(for people who is thinking to do a 360' spin like this - USE FK FOOT! NEVER USE IK FOOT for this, such a pain in the a**!)
