Brode, Brittany - Final Thoughts and Submissions
I'm sorry for the lateness of this post. I have to say that this has been the most enjoyable animation class I've had yet at the Academy. I felt like I learned a lot, especially in terms of acting. Dave, your critique was always constructive and incredibly helpful. My posing is better and I feel more comfortable with creature animation. I like how the class was broken down into two big projects; it really gave us a lot of time to polish our animation. There were a lot of good projects and my classmates had many good points to bring up during dailies.
If I was to criticize any aspect of the class, I would only say that during the second half of the semester, there were certain lessons during which I had a hard time paying attention, especially if there was a question of a more technical nature. I'm still struggling to grasp some of the more technical aspects of Maya.
All that being said, here are the final versions of the two projects I chose to do. I'm especially happy with the horse cycles.
Best to everyone and I hope we meet again!

- Work backwards from goals to milestones to tasks. Writing “launch company website” at the top of your to-do list is a sure way to make sure you never get it done. Break down the work into smaller and smaller chunks until you have specific tasks that can be accomplished in a few hours or less: Sketch a wireframe, outline an introduction for the homepage video, etc. That’s how you set goals and actually succeed in crossing them off your list.
- Stop multi-tasking. No, seriously—stop. Switching from task to task quickly does not work. In fact, changing tasks more than 10 times in a day makes you dumber than being stoned. When you’re stoned, your IQ drops by five points. When you multitask, it drops by an average of 10 points, 15 for men, five for women (yes, men are three times as bad at multitasking than women).
- Be militant about eliminating distractions. Lock your door, put a sign up, turn off your phone, texts, email, and instant messaging. In fact, if you know you may sneak a peek at your email, set it to offline mode, or even turn off your Internet connection. Go to a quiet area and focus on completing one task.
- Schedule your email. Pick two or three times during the day when you’re going to use your email. Checking your email constantly throughout the day creates a ton of noise and kills your productivity.
- Use the phone. Email isn’t meant for conversations. Don’t reply more than twice to an email. Pick up the phone instead.
- Work on your own agenda. Don’t let something else set your day. Most people go right to their emails and start freaking out. You will end up at inbox-zero, but accomplish nothing. After you wake up, drink water so you rehydrate, eat a good breakfast to replenish your glucose, then set prioritized goals for the rest of your day.
- Work in 60 to 90 minute intervals. Your brain uses up more glucose than any other bodily activity. Typically you will have spent most of it after 60-90 minutes. (That’s why you feel so burned out after super long meetings.) So take a break: Get up, go for a walk, have a snack, do something completely different to recharge. And yes, that means you need an extra hour for breaks, not including lunch, so if you’re required to get eight hours of work done each day, plan to be there for 9.5-10 hours.

Finals booster-upper!
So I'm going to say this is relevant because it might be awesome reference for some of you - But as an added bonus, it might be appreciated as a morale-booster.
Finals brings loads of stress and obstacles that seem inescapable. But it doesn't have to be a battle - you can't fight the rain, after all. So sing and dance like a goof-ball, and don't let those obstacles get you down. :) Anywho - this song sort of describes my mentality right now (has been stuck in my head since clear laast week!) and I'm posting it in the off-chance it might help you guys through at least this coming week - and because maybe it is useful reference for someone. << >> Be defiant! Enjoy where you are! And kick butt on your finals! :DD And thank David for being so awesome! ^.^

That's why I have this alternate version in case I couldn't finished it on time. I know it doesn't make any sense but.....that's the only way I can do right now, peace

On the off chance anyone is interested, I actually manage/maintain Tea Time Animation Club's (AAU's animation club) blog. Tea Time meets once a week - Fridays at 3:30 - in room 400a @ 180 NM.
We do critique, chat about upcoming things in the industry and we're doing a LOT of CTN coverage for those of us who are going. If you can't come to the meetings, however, I post any important things we managed to cover on the blog. Think about it!

Bachynski, Lana - Dialogue Progress
Here's the most current update on my animation progress. Clearly I never got the opportunity to finalize the lipsync, but ideally it will be done by the end of the semester. I've got to run right now, but I'll edit this post in an hour or so with my reflections on the first assignment -- enjoy!
As promised, I've got a few words of reflection based upon the first assignment. I would post it under the discussion like everyone else, but sadly, blogger still doesn't allow me the permissions to comment on a post, despite allowing me to make posts of my own.
Anyways, for me, the issue was always finding the time to work between life and my other class work. Albeit this class always takes priority over all of my other classes, I still found myself struggling to reach the goals I had set for myself. That being said, considering we're in school I can't be too upset, as I know that the process of learning is what I should really be concerned with.
What I learned is a smoother, faster workflow, though it took me a few weeks to get into the swing of things. First of all, starting with stepped blocking sort of threw me off, as I've been using the layered approach for several semesters now. However, over time, I developed a work ritual that I feel rather comfortable in, and that helped a lot once I discovered it. I, personally (and though it's probably just from staring at it so much) can physically see the moment it really kicked in.
Addtionally, I've never worked with Morpheus before. Between parenting elbow constraints to the right part of his body, learning how to lock the elbows in the source file, not the reference, and knowing which of the two head controls to animate, I think I will be much more successful in my over all efficiency moving ahead to my next assignment -- a dance!
I know you' ve seen this Dave, but for those who haven't and were interested in what their peers are up to, here's the reference for my next assignment. Even if you don't care, the dancers are amazing and I strongly suggest you check it out just to marvel at your own jaw drop.

Lana Bachynski - Jar of Dirt Critique
That being said, I shall not be silenced! Thus, here is a bit of crit for the post below:
It's nice to hear it with the audio. I find that the slow look between "Dirt" and "This is a jar of dirt" to be particularly successful. I think it really conveys the blatant skepticism in "Jack's" voice nicely.
That being said, I think my main note was touched upon last class: I believe it's important to not lose "Jack's" face when he turns to protect his Jar. I it would still have the same effect ( if not a better one) if you have him turn TOWARDS the camera rather than away from it as then we really get the opportunity to see him clinging to that oh-so-precious dirt.

I'm now officially the full-time Animation Coordinator, (huzzah!) which means I have office hours starting next week. You can make an appointment with Monica or Brian in the office on the 3rd floor. If you make an appointment with me, be sure to have the following:
- a written list of what you want to discuss.
- paper and pen to write down what I tell you.
- any relevant files available on the AAU server.
- thumb drive/hard drive with the same.

Brittany - Morphy's tongue
I'm having trouble getting the tongue to work on Morpheus. I thought the controls were outside the head, next to the controls for the teeth, but when I moved them nothing happened. Then I found two controls on the tongue inside the head, but they don't rotate and in fact seem to have a very limited range of motion. I'm trying to get a nice 'L' shape in my lip sync. Any thoughts?

Ivania - Not Typed Blocking
Hey guys! Ivania, posting. Here's an updated version of my blocking. I feel like I'm falling a little behind, but I wanted to get everything down before moving on. Let me know what you guys think!
Critique
Hey! Looks good.
The entry of the 'boss', as it were, definitely has an angrier feel.
One thing I would probably say is I'm not sure he needs the pat on the back before goes for the face grab.
Also, what's the attitude of the guy at the computer? I know he's supposed to be all "Not this guy again" sort of thing, but no matter how much I don't care about someone, if they grabbed my face and shook me around, I'd probably look a little shaken.
Nice work on the monitor grab. Great job.

I'm thinking of adding a second character (just a walkcycle along the sidewalk perhaps) and my kid either flattening against the wall or trying to look inconspicuous - cheezy - like in a cartoon, as they walk by. My current teacher was confused by his entrance at first, and suggested making it more obvious he's trying to be sneaky - although I was shooting for an obvious, conspicuous type of sneak - I now wonder if anyone else is unsatisfied with it. x_x
Any and every idea is welcome - this week is all about story boarding it out and building a decent set (below)

Maya trouble
I was having trouble with Maya, so I asked Dave for some help. Basically I was having two problems: First of all, every time I opened Maya, I would receive a dialogue box asking me if I wanted to create a shelf button. It wasn't so bad at first, but then it started causing Maya to freeze, to the point where I couldn't even open it. Secondly, since I work with dual monitors, I was opening my reference footage in one monitor and opening Maya on the other, but when I tried to play the reference footage on one screen it ended up taking over the other screen as well.
Dave told me that the first issue was caused by a script in the zooToolBox called zooAutoSave, and that I could remove it by simply deleting the script. Apparently working with dual monitors causes some issues with Maya.
However, I'm still having trouble with the reference footage issue. The problem is not that my reference footage is disappearing; the problem is that when I move my reference footage over to my secondary desktop, it takes over my primary desktop completely, so that I can't access my taskbar or anything. This is what's happening:
Thanks!
~Brittany

Jack - Dialogue assignment blocking
Feel free to comment.
Changing namespace to A mel script
So this is the script
Namespace " " is what you want to change the name space to be.
referenceNode " " is the name space you have currently set for that character.
The location is where the reference material is stored. So if you referenced two characters from the same file, maya usually just adds {1} to the end
You then make two mel scripts (or how ever many characters you have in the scene)
This is to change character 1 into namespace A
This is to change character 2 into namespace A
file -e -namespace "AB" -referenceNode "A" "C:/Users/Tim Li/Desktop/Texturing and lighting/Animation3//scenes/

2009 Projects
I upgraded last year from 2009 to 2011 Maya and I also had to do a backup and system restore on my laptop after that.. well sometime between when I had 2009 and now ALL my 2009 project scene files are completely GONE. The project folders are there for some, but no scene files.. anyone have any ideas to find them?! I already looked in my backup drive and I couldn't find them either, so I think when I upgraded from 2009 to 2011 they were lost, but you'd think Maya would allow you to keep your projects..

1st 2 cycles of Pommel Horse
I have cleaned up the first two cycles this much.. the bothersome thing when you watch this clip is his head. It looks like its moving all around. But, Ive actually rotated it so that it is aligned with the spine in most cases, or where it would be naturally. So im not sure how to avoid this movement. His spine is definitely very active in this animation...

Yikes!

Soooo...I've tried moving the ponyTail_geo_grp into the hair_customGeo_grp - but I still get the same results. The pig tails, aslo, have the same reaction to scaling. They happen to be the only two hair styles made of multiple geometry. And I have no idear how to get this working right - - or is it simply that there is a control specifically designated for scaling??
It's not a huge deal - I can scale up my other character instead. Good thing my dude doesn't have pigtails, though...then I'd reallyyy be stuck. x_x Thought I'd still point it out to ya.

Before I begin the facial stuffs on the guy - I'm interested in knowing what you all make of the posing + timing + anything else :]
The part I'm most unsure about is his first hop. He is leading with his head - and his proportions make it a pretty big overall movement. But if I were to keep it more...forward-facing, his silhouette begins to get muddled. Ugg. opinions?

INSTRUCTOR POST - anm421 Assignment List - Do Any Two
The following is the list of the possible assignments you can do in ANM421. Over the 15 week term you will do any two of these assignments. This means you will have 7 weeks to complete each assignment. Careful planning and steady progress over the entire time are critical to producing good results on these assignments.
1. Character Acting/Dialogue Shot. 15-20 max length with 2 (or more) characters. Could just be silent acting. Keep both characters visible in the scene the entire time and remember that the character not speaking is still acting. The interaction between the two characters is a big part of this assignment.
2. Animation for Games. A basic videogame character set: Idle, Run, Idle2Run, Run2Idle, 3Strike Attack and Running Jump. A character description is required as part of your planning process. Idle: 8 sec long with 2 character “gestures”. Run: 18-24 frames long. Idle2Run and Run2Idle: 1-3 sec each. 3Strike Attack: start/end in idle pose, 3 strikes (armed or unarmed) with each blow more powerful and some forward movement throughout. Running Jump: start/end with start of Run Cycle.
3. Dance/Paired Animation. 15-20 sec max length with 2 (or more) characters with close physical interaction and synchronized choreography, though not necessarily touching. Could be dance (set to music), melee fighting or grappling. Careful reference is critical here.
4. Gymnastics/Obstacle Course/Parkour. 15-20 sec max length. Once character moving through an environment, engaging in broader more physical movement.
5. Creature/Non-Humanoid. 15-20 sec max length. 4 (or more) legged creature. Acting and moving around in an environment.
Remember that 15-20 sec is the maximum time limit, suitable for simpler scenes. 10-12 sec is a good length to allow for good variation, but keep the work manageable. A smaller amount of quality polished work is better than a large unfinished piece.

INSTRUCTOR POST - Welcome New Students
This is a persistent online site I use to allow my students in both sessions of ANM 421 to solicit and offer feedback on their animation. A few important notes:
1. Conduct yourself here as you would in the class. Play nice with others and be supportive and constructive with your comments. Limit the posting to information relevant to the class.
2. I use participation here as part of your class participation mark. If you're shy this is a great way to be involved in the classroom discussion. You'll notice that I have alumni of my class following the blog still. With a little luck they may also offer some critique on your work. To my prior ANIM421 students, please feel free to offer some guidance anytime.
3. This blog is as helpful as you make it. Be active with comments, post your work regularly and take advantage of this venue. Monitor this site at lease once a week. I will use this as a forum to answer common questions, so you don't want to miss out.
Even If you're new to blogging you'll find this a pretty painless and straightforward process. If you have something from class you'd like to show: just playblast your work, click "new post" on the upper right corner of the screen and use the "add video" button on the right side of the upper menu of the new post interface.
I try to look in here regularly and offer critique and guidance as well. Welcome to the blog and have a great time.

INSTRUCTOR POST - The Ex'pression College Morpheus Wardrobe Project is underway
The basic idea is to create a persistent online archive of costumes for use with the Morpheus rig so that animation community has a robust alternative to the aging Norman rig. If you'd like to offer feedback, suggestions or if you'd just like to follow our progress, check out the blog here.
